Running a workshop

Before you begin

Running a story workshop before you start creating your content helps to shape the narrative to support your learning objectives.

It’s important that objectives are outlined prior to your story workshop, as this will inform the discussions. To make your objectives clear, you can use the learning objectives template (coming soon). At this point, it’s a good idea to involve subject matter experts and the learning lead to define your objectives, and to ensure you’re all on the same page.

Roles

Your story workshop should include various roles within your team:

  • Learning lead, producer or designer
  • Those that understand the learning from a learners perspective
  • Subject matter experts
  • Script writer

Your workshop can work with 2 – 10+ people, depending on the scale of your project.

Outcomes

Your story workshop should result in the production of a story document, this outlines:

  • Who should be involved?
  • Where will it take place?
  • What will it involve?
  • What choices will the learner have?

Once this is complete, you can agree and sign off the documents for scripting, game design and production to begin.
